Unmasking Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.

Synthetic graphics purporting to portray Venezuela's president under arrest after his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered countless of views on social media.

How Fake Pictures of Maduro Appeared Rapidly

The first fabricated AI image seemingly showing him being escorted off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. The graphic was unpublished by any authoritative government accounts; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, determining the picture was created or altered with generative AI.

Further synthetic visuals started circulating in the ensuing period, purporting to present additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Discernible identifying marks on these pictures reveal they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

The detection tool says the further pictures were similarly created or altered generative models.

Real Photo Released but Fabrications Persisted

Donald Trump shared the first real photo of Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. Yet following this confirmation was released, AI-generated pictures kept circulating but were altered to include the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.

Digital forensics show these updated fakes were originally uploaded on the video platform by a graphic design account. Once again, analysis confirms the new graphics were created or altered AI tools.

Key Points:

  • Synthetic media spread rapidly after the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The initial fabricated image was shared on the same day on social media.
  • Tools like Google’s SynthID helped to verify the pictures as inauthentic.
  • Fake images persisted to circulate and evolve despite the release of authentic photographs.
  • The origin of several fakes was linked to social media profiles focused on graphic design.
