The Year 2026 Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this rise, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is also evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer natural design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.
If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
