The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
