Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
